What is a Final Grade Calculator?

A final grade calculator is an academic target-planning tool that calculates the exact percentage score you need on a final examination or culminating project to pass a course or secure your desired letter grade. By factoring in your current coursework average and the syllabus percentage weight of your final exam, it provides clear, mathematically verifiable targets before test day.

Final Grade Calculation Formula

The required score on a final exam is derived by rearranging the standard weighted average equation:

Required Score = [Target Grade − (Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight))] ÷ Final Weight

Where Target Grade is your desired overall course percentage, Current Grade is your running average before the final, and Final Weight is expressed in decimal form (e.g., 25% = 0.25).

Worked Numerical Example:

Suppose you currently have an 84% (Current Grade), your final exam is worth 25% (0.25 Weight), and you want to finish with an A (90%) (Target Grade):

Required Score = [90 − (84 × (1 − 0.25))] ÷ 0.25 = [90 − 63] ÷ 0.25 = 27 ÷ 0.25 = 108.0%

Outcome: Reaching 90% requires 108% on the final. This indicates that achieving an A without extra credit is mathematically impossible, allowing you to realistically target an 85% (B) instead.

How to Calculate What You Need on Your Final

1

Find Your Current Average

Check your student LMS portal (Canvas, Blackboard, Schoology) for your overall running course percentage before the final.

2

Check the Final Exam Weight

Consult your course syllabus to determine the exact percentage weight of the exam (typically between 15% and 35%).

3

Set Your Target Grade

Determine the minimum percentage needed for your goal: 90% (A), 80% (B), 70% (C), or 60% (Passing).

4

Evaluate Scenarios

Use our What-If scenario matrix above to evaluate your grade buffer and establish a realistic study strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Final Grades

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?▾
To calculate your required final exam score, subtract the contribution of your current coursework from your desired total grade, then divide by the final exam percentage weight: Required Final = [Target Grade - (Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight))] ÷ Final Weight.
What if the required score on my final is over 100%?▾
If the required score exceeds 100%, achieving your desired grade is mathematically impossible without extra credit opportunities. Consider adjusting your target to the next realistic grade threshold (such as targeting a B+ instead of an A).
Can a final exam lower my grade even if I pass it?▾
Yes. If your exam score percentage is lower than your pre-exam coursework average, your overall grade will decrease. For instance, if you have a 95% in the class and score an 80% on a 30% final exam, your final course grade drops to 90.5%.
What is the formula to find my overall grade after taking the final?▾
To compute your overall grade after receiving your final exam score: Overall Grade = (Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight)) + (Final Exam Score × Final Weight).
