Why Calculated Grades May Differ
Students often ask why their grade calculated online differs from the number shown in Canvas, Blackboard, or their school’s student portal. The following factors account for most variations:
Primary RuleSyllabus Supremacy
The official course syllabus provided by your professor or teacher constitutes the governing authority for your grade. Any specific grading rubrics, weights, or requirements documented in your syllabus override generic calculators.
Scale DifferencesScale & Cutoff Variations
While our tools default to standard U.S. grading bands (90-80-70-60), many universities and private institutions utilize 7-point scales, modified plus/minus cutoffs (e.g. A starting at 93%), or omit D grades entirely.
Canvas / BlackboardLMS Discrepancies
Learning Management Systems (Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, PowerSchool) may hide unsubmitted assignments or apply automated rules (such as dropping lowest scores) that alter your perceived percentage.
Curved GradesCurving & Normalization
Statistical curves (e.g. square-root curving, bell curves, or top-score normalization) modify final letter grade assignments non-linearly, which cannot be modeled through raw arithmetic alone.
Instructor DiscretionRounding Discretion
Whether an 89.50% or 89.95% rounds up to an A (90.00%) or remains a B+ is subject to individual instructor discretion, department bylaws, or university registrar policy.
Subjective MarksExtra Credit & Participation
Subjective marks such as class attendance, participation points, and unannounced extra credit opportunities can alter final standings beyond standard category allocations.
01Recommended Steps for Course Verification
To ensure you make informed decisions regarding course drops, pass/fail deadlines, or graduation qualifications:
- Review Your Course Syllabus: Carefully read the "Grading Criteria" section of your syllabus at the start and middle of every semester.
- Consult Your Instructor During Office Hours: If you are within 1–2 percentage points of a grade boundary, meet with your teacher or teaching assistant to confirm how borderline cases and extra credit are evaluated.
- Check LMS Calculation Settings: In Canvas, beware of the checkbox labeled "Calculate based only on graded assignments", which can give a falsely inflated view of your current standing by omitting unsubmitted zeros.
- Verify Academic Standing With Your Advisor: For prerequisite courses, minimum GPA requirements for athletic eligibility, or degree honors, confirm your standing directly with your school registrar or academic advising office.
